# Data modeling and transformation

Use [Vulcan](https://tmdc-io.github.io/vulcan-book/guides/get-started/docker/) when you need to create a semantic model and perform transformations on top of datasets available through Depot.

## How to consume a Depot in Vulcan?

1. Ensure the Depot is created and the Vulcan project has access to the source.
2. Identify the source datasets to model using their Depot UDL paths.
3. Register or map those source datasets in your Vulcan project as model inputs.
4. Build transformation and semantic models on top of those inputs.

## Concrete example

In Vulcan, Depot usage is declared in project configuration and Resource deployment.

### 1) `domain.yaml` gateway uses a Depot address

```yaml
gateways:
  default:
    connection:
      type: depot
      address: dataos://snowflakevulcan2
```

### 2) `domain-resource.yaml` grants Depot access to the run

```yaml
spec:
  depots:
    - dataos://snowflakevulcan2?purpose=rw
```

Vulcan models can now run on data made available through that Depot connection.

## Typical use cases

* Building semantic models for governed analytics.
* Defining reusable metrics and dimensions for BI consumption.
* Powering consistent reporting across teams.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://v2.dataos.info/concepts/resources/depot/consume/vulcan.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
