# Link an external application

Use this option when the application is already hosted and running externally. Registering the URL creates a `link` Resource that associates the application with the Data Product in the catalog. Consumers can discover and open it from DataOS UI.

## Prerequisites

* You have a Data Product that the application consumes.
* You have `dataos-ctl` configured for the target Tenant.
* **You have the `data-developer` tag assigned to your user account.** Run the following command to check your current tags:

  ```bash
  dataos-ctl user get
  ```

  In the output, confirm that `roles:id:data-developer` appears in the **TAGS** column for your user. If the tag is missing, contact your operator to have it assigned before proceeding.
* You have the URL of the hosted application.

</details>

## Troubleshooting

<details>

<summary>The link opens to an error or blank page</summary>

The hosted application URL is wrong or the app is down. Confirm `spec.link.url` is correct and the hosted application is reachable from a browser.

</details>

<details>

<summary>The Data Product relationship is not shown in the catalog</summary>

`spec.link.products` is missing or the product name is incorrect. Add the correct Data Product name under `spec.link.products` and re-apply the manifest.

# Agent Instructions
This documentation is published with GitBook. GitBook is the documentation platform designed so that both humans and AI agents can read, navigate, and reason over technical content effectively. Learn more at gitbook.com.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://v2.dataos.info/consume/activate/apis/overview/link-an-external-application.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
